Dried Flowers

If we are looking for permanence when purchasing a floral gift, dried flowers are the closest choice to natural flowers. While dried flowers are long lasting and tolerant of most temperatures, they are still real flowers, preserved in a manner that partly maintains their own traits. The significance of dried flowers in indoor decoration comes in waves, bringing fresh inspirations and ideas along with old applications and techniques. Nowadays, dried flowers are widely used in arrangements bouquets and wreaths.

The history of preserving flowers dates back to the Ancient Egyptians, who provided their dead with elaborate garlands, grains and herbs to enjoy in the next world. By working with dried flowers to create enduring designs and retain the exquisite beauty of the living plant, the Japanese created Oshibana, the "pressed flower art" centuries ago. The enthusiasm for this craft later spread from Japan to Victorian England. Using this technique, Victorian ladies designed pictures using dismembered cones, lavender, barley and ribbons, as well as displayed dried flowers in glass domes. Dried flowers were also pressed within the covers of books, holding memories of romantic moments.

Dry flower arrangements have an eternal charm with their predominant tones of rich, warm brown, rust, orange, burgundy, and red. However, for an exclusive look, dried flowers can be teamed up with other items of contrasting shapes and colors, such as grasses, leaves, fern, stalks, berries and cones as well as metallic colored natural items.

We can prepare our dried flowers by several methods, such as air drying, oven drying, drying with desiccants or sand drying, accommodating to the different kinds of floral material. However, probably the easiest and the most effective way to dry most of them, is to tie them in small bundles and hang upside down in a well ventilated warm place. Making dry flower arrangements is the best way to preserve our favorite flowers, as well as create unique works of art out of them.

However, if we are not skilful enough to create our own arrangement, we can easily purchase them from the florists. Dried flowers are usually less expensive as fresh ones and do not require much care. By regular dusting and keeping them away from direct sunlight, they will keep their unique attributes for a long time and will provide us with a unique indoor decoration.
