Flower Arrangement

Flower arranging is the art of organizing and grouping together flowers or other plant materials to achieve unity, balance and rhythm with harmony of form, color, and texture.

A decorative flower arrangement design requires the use of different elements, such as line materials, the first pieces of a flower arrangement to establish the overall measurement, as well as dominant and smaller mass flowers. To add texture to an arrangement, filler flowers and leaves can be also included along with special materials, such as vines, twigs and even moss. A flower arrangement might also have a focal point, such as a statue, figurine or the impact of a unique flower in color, type or size, to give an accent to the design.

Although the art of flower arranging doesn’t require any strict rules to be followed, based on their designs, flower arrangements can be categorized into three very distinct styles.

Adopted from the ancient times, the traditional flower arrangement design uses a large number of beautiful blooms arranged in a vase, to enhance our senses with their beauty, and fragrance. The primary principles of this design are balance, harmony, proportion and color.

On the contrary, the modern flower arrangement technique uses several accessories, and clean lined containers with a minimal number of bright flowers to achieve a bold sleek design. With attention to detail and use of unconventional accessories, this is a creative and energetic style of flower arrangement, which makes it appropriate for most occasions.

Oriental floral design, also known as Ikebana, is the Japanese flower arrangement that has its origins in the 7th century. Ikebana requires exceptionally delicate and precise techniques and special utensils. Ikebana focuses on other areas of the plant, such as the line of stems, twigs and leaves, rather than on the blooms themselves. This design uses a small number of blooms and is complemented by the style of the container, which is also an important element of the Ikebana style.

While the traditional and modern flower arrangement styles are widely used for decoration purposes, Ikebana traditionally belongs to the non-commercial category of floral arrangements. Its purpose is to give pleasure to the person creating the arrangement as much as to serve any practical function.
